Tidy Towns Report Contd.
Sustainability – Doing more with less: This is an area that working with the school certainly helps. It is about reducing the amount of waste produced by the community and better management of resources. The school learn many ways of saving as part of the Green School Initiative and this can then be adopted by the wider community. Well done on the school walkability audit. These studies identify the good points along with drawing attention to where the route could be improved, like the uneven road surfaces. The children are also learning how to grow their own vegetables and plants from seeds. These are very good savings as they cut down on packaging and air miles. Harvesting of rainwater is also commended. These are all ways that the wider community could adapt to make greater savings. Using the rural transport is also commended. Car-pooling as you suggested would help to reduce travel. Well done on the audits and advice from expert speakers as this all helps to identify more ways of saving and demonstrates better management of waste.
Tidiness and Litter Control: Well done on your participation in the council anti-litter challenge. How have you been doing in this challenge? Taking part in this and the national spring clean creates awareness among the wider community and encourages more members to get involved. Has the amount of litter each year reduced as this shows that your plan of action around litter is working? Your decision on not providing more bins is noted. In some villages and towns bins had to be removed as they were being used for domestic waste. Dog fouling can be a major problem but dog owners should be responsible for cleaning up after their pets. The village was almost litter free on the day of adjudication. There was some over flowing at the clothes bank. The railing around the children’s playground needs freshening.
