Following on from the new restrictions imposed by government, the organisers are adhering to these new guidelines and have cancelled the side events that were planned for that day. The tidy towns association are most thankful to the general public for their magnificent response to this fund raiser. Ducks can still be purchased from any of the committee before the off on Saturday afternoon.
During August 1920, a military cycle patrol operated at irregular intervals on the Courtmacsherry – Timoleague road via Barryroe. The patrol usually consisted of one or two officers and 12 to 15 soldiers armed with rifles. The officers of the Barryroe Company decided to ambush the patrol. Up to 30 members of the company took up positions behind a roadside fence north of the Courtmacsherry – Barryroe road about a mile from Barryroe Creamery on the road to Courtmacsherry. Nearly all members of the company on duty were armed with shotguns. A party of 3 or 4 of the company were in position at the western end of the ambush position where it was proposed to hold up the officers who were leading the patrol. Although they took up the same position on three successive nights, there was no appearance by the enemy patrol. This was a common occurrence in relation to planned ambushes of the military as already outlined on these pages. Many of the planned encounters by the Barryroe and Timoleague Companies were aborted when the enemy failed to show.
Junior Hurling Championship
Timoleague was the venue for the junior hurling championship game involving near neighbours Clonakilty and Ardfield. The game was played behind “closed doors” and the atmosphere was not like that of old. Both clubs were restricted to 40 being present and while the noise level was a bit subdued, the spirit and commitment on view by both teams was certainly not lacking in fervour. There was little to separate both teams for three quarters of the game but Clonakilty had that little bit in reserve all the time and they pulled away in the last ten minutes to record a 2-20 to 2-13 victory.
