Argideen Rangers' Junior A footballers faced St. James last Saturday evening in a splendidly appointed new pitch in Ahiohill. The men from the mountain had beaten Argideen by a single point last year on their way to the county football final. Timoleague played into the stiff breeze in the opening half and opened the scoring with a fine Oisín Dowling point. The woodwork denied them a further 1-01 before Ardfield regained the lead. The list of walking wounded from Timoleague grew even longer as John Michael O' Callaghan was forced off with a serious shoulder injury ten minutes into the game.
However, the team held firm, despite also being temporarily reduced to fourteen men due to a black card offence, and went in three points down at half time, mainly due to fine defending from Andrew McCarthy, Cathal and Darragh O' Donovan. Further points from Ardfield at the start of the second half stretched their lead to five points and things were looking bleak for Timoleague. However, the side kept plugging away, tagged on some great scores from Oisín Dowling, Eoin Lawton, Dylan Harrington and Matthew Lawton and were back in contention with ten minutes to go.
Some clever play from Sean Maxwell set up the evergreen finisher Brian Hennessey to cooly slot home a crucial goal that now sets up a local derby with Ballinascarthy next Saturday evening in Newcestown at 5:45pm. Team; Dan Hurley, Darragh O' Donovan, Andrew McCarthy, Cathal O' Donovan, Sean Maxwell, Paudie Butler, Darragh Holland, Eoin Lawton, Andrew Guinevan, John Michael O' Callaghan, Matthew Lawton, Dylan Harrington, Oisín Dowling, Brian Hennessy and Bill Fleming. Subs used; Joe Murphy, Finbarr Butler and Eoin Guinevan.
