During the month of September, orders were issued to each Battalion that a levy to support the arms fund should be collected in the brigade area. This work was passed on to the companies who had particular knowledge of the ability of each farmer and shopkeeper to pay the money required. The levy was based on the Poor Law Valuation of the holding or premises at a rate of 3d (3 pence) in the pound. In nearly all cases the landholders paid up on request. However, a number of people refused to pay the levy and a report was sent to the commanding officer. It became necessary to threaten to seize stock to the value of the amount of the levy before the majority of occupiers concerned agreed to contribute. A small number were not very co-operative and members of the Timoleague company entered Courtmacsherry village and made seizures from some people who were very hostile. In one case the person raided was in touch with the local British military garrison by phone and the members of the company involved in the operation were very lucky to escape in the darkness as they were being surrounded.
Members of the company also entered Timoleague village and made seizures but the British military learned of their presence and they were fired on by the military but managed to escape. In all some £300 was collected in the Timoleague company area for the arms fund during this time.
Ibane Ladies
Congratulations to our players who recently received their Leaving Cert results and are now deciding on options for the year ahead!
There was plenty of action on the pitch again this week. The U14 squad were defeated against Dohenys in their latest West Cork league fixture played last Monday night. The U16 girls defeated Keelnameela in a very closely fought contest in Barryroe on Wednesday night. Next out were our U12 girls who defeated Clonakilty last Friday night, and finally the Junior Ladies secured a great win on Sunday over Shamrocks in the next round of the Championship.
Below is a photo of the victorious Ibane junior football team that defeated Shamrocks on Sunday last.
Ibane Ladies wish to extend our congratulations and absolute delight to the West Cork Senior Ladies panel, management and supporting clubs on their impressive County Final win on Sunday! No doubt there were families tuned in from all corners of West Cork shouting you on, as was the case in my own home! Well done to all involved!
