Community Notes September 26th
September 23, 2020
During the month of September certain members of the local company were selected for special training. It was thought that this training was essential if “the professionals” were to be defeated. A training camp was established at Ballymurphy during the end of September. One volunteer from the Timoleague Company attended and he underwent a course of training under Charlie Hurley and later Tom Barry. He volunteered for service with the Brigade Flying Column on its foundation, but because of his specialist skill, he was ordered by Brigade Officer Commanding, Charlie Hurley to travel to Dublin to work in a bomb factory there for GHQ.
Another training camp was established at O’Brien’s Clonbuig, Kilbrittain at this time also. Brigade officers selected men for specialist training with the intention of increasing the membership of the Brigade Flying Column. Four members of the Timoleague company were selected for this training. In all about 40 were at the training camp with Tom Barry in charge as the brigade training officer. Clonbuig was about two and a half miles from Kilbrittain where there was a Black and Tan post. Bandon was in close proximity also with Kinsale further away. There were large British garrisons stationed in both towns. The camp was well guarded by scouts who formed a ring around it. When the volunteers arrived at the camp they were broken up into sections and section commanders were appointed to each. The training was heavy and lasted for the full day over a seven- day period. Footdrill, extended order and ambush positions were all practiced. After aiming practice, volunteers were given an opportunity to fire three or four rounds at targets.
At the conclusion of the training, Tom Barry was appointed O/C of the column.

Ibane Ladies Football
Congratulations to our U12 squad who were victors over Clonakilty in their non -competitive fixture on Friday last. Congratulations also to the Minor ladies who had a great game against Beara in the searing September heat last Sunday, another win for them in their league.
There are two fixtures this week. The Junior ladies next LGFA championship fixture is away to Cobh on Saturday 26th, thrown in at 6:15. We are hugely excited that our U16 ladies compete in the West Cork Final on Sunday next. That fixture versus Tadgh MacCathraigh takes place on Sunday, 27th September at 11:30 in Ahiohill. Best of luck to all participating in this week’s fixtures, especially to the U16s in their quest for silverware!
The club also pass our congratulations to members who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday last, September 19th.
Tidy Towns
While there was no National Tidy Towns competition this year, that did not prevent the local Tidy Towns Association from doing their usual annual work schedule. Local volunteers could be seen diligently doing their jobs to enhance the appearance of the village. Many new faces were in evidence and the officers are heartened by the influx of new volunteers. Not only is it a vote of confidence in the work of the tidy towns group in Timoleague but the addition of new blood gives everyone renewed hope and optimism for the future. The photos in the group’s Facebook page and the positive comments from tourists is also a great boost to the efforts of the local volunteers who help make Timoleague the beautiful village that it is.
