Covid Restrictions
The announcement of the introduction of level 3 restrictions has had major implications on business and social activity throughout the country. Timoleague, unfortunately is no exception. Local businesses made great efforts to re-open after the first lock down. Now they have been dealt another blow as they have been forced to re-assess. Charlie Madden’s Bar is remaining open with strict limits on patrons. Customers are not permitted indoors but the beer garden is open at the rear. Strict social distancing is in force. Simon and Sheila are asking customers to ring ahead and reserve a time slot so as to avoid disappointment.
Meanwhile down in Abbey Street in Pad Joe’s Bar, arrangements are slightly different. Conor and Tracie are opening at week-ends only. Again, as is the rule, customers will be outdoors, with social distancing being rigidly adhered to.
Monk’s Lane is closed at present and Gavin and Michelle will hopefully re-open when the present restrictions ease. When a business is forced to close, it impacts on a large number of people. The owners obviously take a hit, but there are staff members to consider also not to mention suppliers. Let’s hope that these restrictions will have the desired effect. It is incumbent on all of us to play our part in the fight against this pandemic.
Tidy Towns
Molaga Tidy Towns Association was successful in its application for grant funding under the Community Enhancement Programme 2020 recently announced by Cork County Council. The local tidy towns group sought funding for the purchase of a ride-on lawnmower. This was a project that had been discussed for some time among the members. The area around the village and the railway walkway from Timoleague to Courtmacsherry has quite a lot of grass and its proper upkeep has been a priority of the tidy towns group for some time. The grass margin between the Abbey and the water was cut under contract by the county council. The purchase of a ride-on lawnmower will allow the cutting and maintenance of the grass area to be undertaken on a more frequent basis. This is a particularly scenic area and is a viewing point on The Wild Atlantic Way. It is also the first point of viewing and contact by the many visitors and tourists that park here.
The award of €3,850 in grant funding to Molaga Tidy Towns has been warmly welcomed and Cork County Council are thanked for this grant aid.
When the training at Clonbuig ended, Tom Barry was appointed O/C of the column. The column moved from Kilbrittain. On the 9th. of October the column lay in ambush at Farranbolus on the Dunmanway to Ballineen road and although the men waited until mid-night, the British did not appear. Shortly after this the column was disbanded for a time.
Seven members of the Timoleague Company raided a ship at Courtmacsherry about the time the column was being formed. A pipe case was used to hold up the captain and a .45 revolver was captured. About a fortnight later another ship was raided but no arms were found on board.
Timoleague Golf Society
Timoleague Golf Society travelled to the local Clonakilty Golf Course at Lisselan recently. The weather was glorious and the golfers thoroughly enjoyed the day. A big “thank you” to society captain, Justin O’Donovan who handled all the arrangements in expert fashion. Social distancing was strictly observed and there was no big get together for the presentation of prizes afterwards, as would normally be the case. None the less considering the present circumstances all golfers expressed total satisfaction with the day and are eagerly looking forward to the next outing.
