Further Covid Restrictions

The government has introduced further restrictions this week. The majority of local businesses will again have to close for a further 6 weeks. Monk’s Lane is already closed and Pad Joe’s Bar and Charlie Madden’s Bar pulled down the shutters on Wednesday night. Local hairdressers Catherine Ryan, Marian O’Callaghan and Mary G. Freyne have also been forced to shut up shop as has local barber Ann Glennon. This will leave the village centre a bit like The Deserted Village of old. It will be similar to the first lock down but the approach of winter and the deterioration in the weather as well as the change in time, the evenings and nights will be rather more drab. Timoleague Health Clinic, Harrington’s Pharmacy and Foley’s Centra will remain open, being classified as essential services.

If all that isn’t enough, the high tides and strong winds this week left the coast roads around Timoleague flooded and impassable. Another lock down of sorts. A case of being hit on all sides but one has to be positive in outlook. It will get better.

This week 100 years ago, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence Mc Swiney was greviously ill in Brixton Prison, London. On his incarceration he began a hunger strike which was to last for 74 days. He died on Monday October 25th at 5.40am. Fr. Dominic, the Lord Mayor’s private chaplain and the Lord Mayor’s brother, Sean remained in the prison throughout Sunday night at hid bedside. His hunger strike and eventual death gained worldwide attention.

A number of special documentaries on his life are being aired this week to commemorate the 100th. anniversary of his death.

Nearer to home at Bandon Quarter Sessions, 100 years ago this month, County Court Judge Hynes KC awarded £100 to the mother and £600 to the brother of Constable Brick who was shot dead at Ahawadda Ambush on the 10th. of May. In July, compensation was awarded to Mrs. Flynn who lost her husband, Sergeant Flynn in the same ambush. She was awarded £1,000 for the killing of her husband and £800 was awarded to each of her 3 children on the loss of their father. Another casualty of the ambush was Constable Dunne. His wife was awarded £1,000 also on the death of her husband and £1,000 was awarded to each of her three children.
