Molaga Tidy Towns Association would like to thank everyone who supported their Christmas Raffle. The committee are especially grateful to all who sponsored prizes and those who braved the elements on Friday and Saturday selling tickets. The draw took place at The Community Hall and the following were the lucky winners: Martin Mc Sweeney, Courtmacsherry; David Murphy, Courtmacsherry; Neily Duggan, Cregane; John Lordan (083)3633887; Brigid Hennessy, Abbey Street; Ina O’Donovan, Main Street; Brenda O’Driscoll, Timoleague Post-Office; Marih O’Leary (086)1075348; Joe (086)8702897.
New Lighting
This year there has been an addition to the street lighting. A new strand has been added on Main Street near the chapel steps. The community would like to thank Niall O’Donovan, his brother Pat and Donal Murray for providing this new bright colour vista to Main Street.
People have remarked that the Christmas Crib is not in its usual location at the village centre. This year there is no crib on the side altar in the church because of covid restrictions. It was felt that the crib should be erected and placed near The Legion of Mary Stall. Families can visit the crib in the open air safe in the knowledge that all is in accordance with the present restrictions.
As mentioned in last weeks notes there was quite a lot of destruction to property in the Timoleague area during December 1920. The Essex Regiment was billeted at Timoleague Castle for some time before transferring to The Coastguard Station at Courtmacsherry. Members of this particular regiment did not endear themselves too well to the local population. They went on many a destructive rampage at this time. A number of graves in the abbey were desecrated much to the annoyance of the relatives of the deceased and the village population. A platoon of the same regiment was camped for a while at Barryshall, across the road from the Kingston farm.
Drive In Bingo
Timoleague Community are hosting a Drive- In Bingo on Sunday, January 3rd. at 2pm at The Grain Store Yard, Timoleague. One can book a spot by contacting the director of bingo at (086)1697628. Your support for this novel venture would be greatly appreciated. The gate opens at 1pm.
Cork Minor Footballers
Cork minor footballers didn’t enjoy much luck at Tralee last week when the Kerry lads defeated them in extra time. Cork seemed to be well placed entering the home straight but missing an easy goal chance and the concession of some questionable frees did them no favours. The Walsh twins, Sean and Fergal acquitted themselves well and they will have other days in the red of Cork in years to come.
Christmas Greetings
I would like to avail of this opportunity to wish all readers of The Southern Star, a happy Christmas, but especially the readers of the Timoleague Notes. It has been a strange year but it won’t be always like this. Here’s hoping that the New Year will bring a return to normality and that people will behave sensibly to overcome the Covid – 19 virus. Wishing all readers, a happy, peaceful and a healthy New Year.
