Ibane Ladies Football Club
It has been a busy few weeks for the ladies at Ibane Ladies football club with many squads playing their first competitive fixtures of 2021.
The Junior ladies played against St. Colemans in Shanagarry on Friday July 2nd and emerged as worthy winners when the final whistle blew. The Junior squad next played Killavullen in Barryroe on Friday July 9th in a nail -biting contest that ended in a draw. Credit to both teams on an intense, well fought contest. The Juniors next fixture is against Mayfield in Timoleague on Sunday 18th at 7:30.
Our U16 ladies first fixture in their season took place against Muintir Gabriels in Durrus on Monday 5th July. They were delighted with their win at the end of what was a cracking game of football. Well done to all players and mentors involved in these fixtures.
Our U12 ladies were excited to play their first fixture against Doheny’s in Dunmanway also on Monday 5th July. The girls gave a great display of their football skills, worked well as a team on the field and won their match.
Our U14 ladies played their first fixture of the season on Sunday 11th in Timoleague against Beara. While the girls worked hard right through to the final whistle, it was not enough to conquer a determined Beara side.
Finally, our U10 ladies were bursting with excitement when news broke of their fixture against Courceys last Monday night 12th July. Well done to all the U10 ladies in those challenge games, great to see skills taking hold, and the joy of the sport for so many on the night!

Tidy Towns Duck Race
Molaga-Timoleague Tidy Towns Association are holding their annual fundraising duck race on Saturday evening, July 24th. The tide dictates that the race will take place between 6pm and 7pm on that evening. The ducks will be released just up river from the Bandon Bridge and the finish line will be below The Pontoon. This week-end ducks will be on offer at The Cross in the village centre and at Foley’s Centra on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th. Ducks can also be bought Under The Abbey on Saturday afternoon.
As restrictions due to Covid have hampered fundraising for all voluntary causes and organisations, the organising committee are appealing to the generosity of the public to keep the Timoleague Tidy Towns to the forefront of their thoughts over the next two weeks.
In last week’s notes I made mention of some local volunteers engaged in the construction of a dug-out at Castleview and how they were surprised by a military patrol. In the ensuing skirmish, one volunteer, Timothy Keohane was captured while the other four managed to escape. Timothy held the rank of 2nd. Lieutenant of the Timoleague Company and was a member of The Flying Column. In his witness statement he tells that prior to his arrest, he was on active duty with The Column in the Bantry area. They then moved to Rossmore where after a few days in billets, the column was disbanded for a while.
He returned home and continued operating on local activities of scouting, blocking roads and carrying dispatches until his arrest at Castleview. He was taken to Clonakilty Barracks and he was tried for giving a false name and sentenced to six months hard labour. He was removed to The Military Detention Barracks, Cork Prison and later to Spike Island Prison Compound. On completion of his sentence, he was transferred to Spike Island Internment Camp and finally to Maryborough Prison before being released on December 8th 1921.
