Community Notes August 14th
August 10, 2021
Our Lady’s Well
The 15th. of August is a date that has special significance in Timoleague. It is the feast of the Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary. Our Lady’s Well on the outskirts of the village has been a place of worship over the centuries. Families travelled to Timoleague annually to pray at the well and it was a meeting place where relatives, friends and neighbours combined the secular with the sacred.
Mass was celebrated there each 15th. of August, but this will not be the case this year due to Covid restrictions. In its place, the rosary will be recited and this will signal a return to the age -old practice associated with this special place. Our Lady’s Well dates back to the time of the arrival of the monks to the area. A beautiful story is told of how it came to be. Leprosy was widespread at that time. A monk happened to take a walk out the country. It was a very hot day and he took a nap under a tree. He prayed that the Lord would cure the dreaded disease. He fell asleep and a dove dropped a letter at his feet. It said that if he dug deep, he would discover a spring, the waters of which would have healing powers. The good monk did as commanded and the rest they say is history. There are stories told of cures attributed to Our Lady and sticks and crutches have been left behind by those who have sought Devine help and have benefited from its healing waters.
The rosary will be recited there on Sunday afternoon next at 3pm.
Timoleague and Clogagh Parish
By means of the new donate button on the parish website, Timoleagueparish.wordpress.com, offertory collections can be accepted via credit card on a one off basis. It can also be set up to recur automatically. Parish finances have been reduced over the last 18 months, however the running costs of the parish have not done so. If you are not attending any of the parish masses at present due to concerns over Covid and are availing of the on- line masses at the weekend then you can contribute by this new format. For updates on parish events check the parish facebook page.

Also, specialist Finola Finlay will be giving two insightful talks at 3pm and 4pm on the many fine examples there are of stained-glass windows. See www.timoleaguemosaics.ie for further details. All are welcome.
