Tidy Towns Report
The historical sites and heritage is important to the village. The 13th century Franciscan Abbey is your main tourist attraction. It is situated on the banks of the river Argideen and presently is under-going repairs which are showing good results, as your photos confirm. Another important heritage building is the Catholic Church. This building includes three windows by stained glass artist Harry Clarke. At the entrance to the church is a time line depicted through plaques on the ground. The history and heritage of the village is explained through these and they are a big tourist attraction. The Church of the Ascension or Mosaics is another fine heritage building. The conservation of the building is ongoing. When completed it will be well deserved. The Courthouse is another heritage building which holds a lot of heritage within its walls. The street scape with its traditional shop fronts complements the village heritage. The railway park is an excellent amenity and certainly has been of great comfort to the community in recent times. A new map has been designed for the village which shows information on the history of the village, its businesses and also the looped walks. Two new looped walks of 6km and 10 km have been completed. The greenway walking route the “Argideen Valley Trail” which links with other villages and towns has a number of information signs erected marking points of interest along the way. The project is ongoing. The children’s playground is a superb well -maintained amenity with plenty of play equipment for the children to enjoy. The grounds in this area are well maintained.
