Tidy Towns Report Contd.
In relation to green spaces and landscaping, the report states that there are some superb areas of planting around the village as noted from your photos. The Railway Park with its noted sleepers, provides a lovely green are for relaxing and taking in the beautiful surroundings. The colourful planted boxes on the bridges that are on two approach roads brings a great splash of colour to the entrances of the village. The plant containers opposite Centra which you have upcycled look good but recommendation would to use stone to build a bed there and plant it with plants, more in keeping with the surroundings. If it is possible to plant in the ground all the better. The same recommendation would be suggested for the planted container shown in the first photo in this category. Ground planting where possible is encouraged. The poly tunnel at the school will make a good educational project for the children. The future project “little orchard” will be welcomed in next year’s entry.
In relation to nature and biodiversity in the locality, the report noted that Timoleague is rich in Biodiversity and unique habitats. The estuary surrounding the village is home to a lot of birds. This is a protected area during nesting times and attracts many bird watchers to the area to watch the wildlife. There is a duck pond at the start of the estuary where ducks can be seen all year round. More wildlife planting to complement the surroundings of the village is encouraged. Groups are also encouraged to embrace and celebrate the wildlife that is present in their area. This can be done by hosting walks with the school and wider community. Carrying out a survey of wildlife that exists in a particular area and providing information leaflets and panels on the findings such as the one you have done for the historical sites would be welcomed.
Remember Me November Service
Covid restrictions meant that the planned format for this year’s remembrance ceremony had to be changed. The reduction of numbers attending funerals has limited the support that friends and neighbours can give to families of the bereaved. This makes the organisation of the Remember Me service of great importance in remembering the deceased person and affording parishioners an opportunity of being present to offer support to the grieving families.
The chairman of the parish council, Fachtna Hennessy thanked the sub -committee who had put a lot of work into organising this year’s poignant, dignified and holy service which was live streamed on Sunday night last from Timoleague Church.
Tidy Towns Presentation
Timoleague Tidy Towns Association represented by chairperson Donal Barry and PRO Valerie Burns made a presentation to Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Station last week. The donation was very kindly accepted by Paul Finn and Angela Veldman of the local committee.
