Tidy Towns Report Contd.
Under the heading, “Sustainability-Doing more with less”, the report states “we look at ways that the group’s activities are making their area more sustainable. There are many examples of where your village group is helping to do this. Harvesting rainwater and using it for watering flowers and other tasks around the village is one source. The using of the flower pots project helped during Covid, in delivery of plants to some of the residents. Growing your own plants from cuttings and seeds helps the environment and is more economical. Street furniture made from recycled plastic such as in your picnic area is commended. Using local stone for flower bed surrounds and segregating litter clean ups are all good examples of how groups can help top reduce waste and also save on spending”.
In relation to tidiness and litter control, the report says “you have a good plan in place around keeping the village clean and tidy. Taking part in the County litter campaign yearly has created an awareness among the community. Although this campaign could not take place over the last two years, the community came out in force to do clean ups. The council help out by collecting the litter and thankfully the amount collected is reducing which is a good omen. The council also helps throughout the year with sweepers. Erecting bilingual signage on keeping the village litter free also helps the cause. People visiting the village and especially the picnic area respect the tidiness of the surroundings. The railway park is a superb amenity where a lot of people visit regularly for recreation and relaxation. Cleaning the overgrowth from the entrance to the pontoon which the tidy towns were instrumental in installing many years ago has greatly improved the appearance of the area. Photos show a big improvement. It is good to see the children helping out ensuring the village is kept neat and tidy. Well done to all involved.
