Training Programme
Timoleague has been given the opportunity to be part of the Sustainable Communities Training Programme. Designed and developed by SECAD Partnership CLG in conjunction with delivery partners, VOICE , the Sustainable Communities Training Programme seeks to enable communities to build Community Development Teams. To get the most from the programme it would be great to get volunteers from all the voluntary groups and businesses in the village. If you are a member of any local organisation or in business in the area and would like to be involved, please contact Susan on 087 7388391 for further information.
Tidy Towns Report
In the Residential Streets and Housing Areas section the report states that “the village has three main streets: Mill Street, Main Street and Abbey Street. The three streets meet at the centre. Chapel hill takes you to the Church and the housing estate. The housing estate is maintained to a very high standard by the residents. The council look after the green in this area. There is a good mix of building along the streetscape with many heritage buildings as mentioned in an earlier category. The houses along the streetscape have brightly painted facades with window boxes, hanging baskets and planted containers bringing colour and life to the streetscape. The Community Playschool looks bright, cheerful and welcoming with its colourful decorative wall. Well done to all the residents for their work in presenting their homes to such a good standard as our photos confirm”.
In relation to Approach Roads, Streets and Lanes, the report notes that “the village has been undergoing water/sewerage treatment over the last two years which has been disruptive to the village. Presently the machines are back doing the remaining repairs that have yet to be finished. Entrance signs and signage in the village has been kept clean. Bilingual signage and maps showing the historical sites of the village have been erected. The village has an abundance of walking routes. One route in particular to the neighbouring village of Courtmacsherry is completely accessible to all the community”.
In its concluding remarks, the report goes on to say that “Timoleague has done good work as always for the competition. Thank you for your submission and excellent pictures that told your story for this year. You are wished well with your future projects”
Street Lighting
The public lighting on the village streets did not escape the wrought of Storm Barra. Parts of the village has been plunged into darkness and gives a Dickensian aura to the streetscape once darkness falls. The floodlighting at The Abbey especially the lights that illuminate the magnificent imposing edifice as one enters the village, alas, is not performing its proper function either. This floodlighting scheme, the brainchild of the now defunct Timoleague Development Association was innovative back in the day but it now needs a total overhaul to be brought up to modern standards. Maybe a call to Susan with regard to the Sustainable Communities Training Programme might help kick start a state- of -the- art floodlighting system for The Abbey. Our much- loved monastic ruin deserves nothing less.
The erection of the Christmas Lights on the village streets has helped to brighten up the village centre in its hour of darkness. A big “thank you” to the many community volunteers who undertake this illuminative facelift to the village at this festive time each year. The Christmas Tree is standing at its usual location at The Cross and will be joined by the crib as Christmas draws nearer.
Railway Park
Timoleague Tidy Towns Association have commissioned four display panels outlining the history of the railway in Timoleague. The panels will be officially on view on Sunday next, Dec. 19th in The Railway Park at 3pm. The first steam train puffed into the railway station where the railway park is now located on December 20th. 1890. The railway network continued in operation until it was closed down on in 1961. It holds a special place in the hearts of many of the older generation and the panels will bring back many memories for some and will be a valuable source of information for others. Covid restrictions in relation to social distancing will be observed at this open air function.
