Community Notes Jan 29th
January 25, 2022
On Sunday week last, 100 years ago the formal hand over of Dublin Castle took place. There had been a gradual transfer of power over the weeks before hand after the Irish delegation had returned from the treaty talks in London on the 6th. of December 1921. While it is widely known that our fellow West-Cork man, Michael Collins played a pivotal part in this process, what is not known is that there is a Timoleague link with the transfer from British to Irish rule during those never to be forgotten weeks. What is the link or who was it? All will be revealed next week.
Racing Success
You will have read in these notes about the exploits of locally trained racehorse, FonsVivus. I did reveal that she was entered in the bumper at The Cork Race Track at Mallow and that she should be supported for financial gain. Well, if you took my advice, you had a good start to the New Year. The Padraig Butler trained mare ridden by her usual jockey, Darragh Allen opened at 12/1 and finished up at 9/1. She made all the running on her track debut and won in an exciting finish to hold off the favourite Henning by a four and three parts of a length.
Now the word on the street is that she is entered in the Dublin Racing Festival meeting at Leopardstown on February 5th. and 6th. Check out The Irish Field or any reputable newspaper, The Southern Star included of course!
Lifting of Restrictions
The welcome news of the lifting of many of the restrictions imposed by the government due to Covid was greeted with delight by many on Saturday last. Both bars in the village experienced a surge in trade over the week-end. However, many customers having got used to the early eight o’clock closing, continued to arrive for their usual tipple earlier than normal. Whether the new normal will remain or the old normal returns, time will decide! One comment that was without debate was the return for the regular clientele to the high stool at the counter. Some things never change! The re-opening of the popular Monk’s Lane is also eagerly awaited.
Restrictions were also relaxed in the parish churches last week-end. Both witnessed increased congregations for Saturday and Sunday masses. Mons. Barry and Fr. Hickey both remarked that it was great to see the people back in large numbers and that it was like old times.
People would be well advised to act sensibly for the foreseeable future as the pandemic has not gone away.
SECAD Programme
Volunteers from a number of community organisations in Timoleague have signed on to participate in the SECAD Sustainable Communities Training Programme. The training programme involves progressing a specific project and developing a community plan for Timoleague village into the future. Anyone that has an interest in their own local community within the greater Timoleague area and would like to participate in this very worthwhile initiative are asked to contact Susan at (087)7388391 for further information.
