U17 league win
July 19, 2022
On Sunday morning last the under 17 Ibane Gaels footballers travelled to Ballyvourney to play Naomh Aban in the league final. In sweltering heat both teams served up a top -class football performance. Nothing very much separated the team throughout this great game and it was the visitors who finished the stronger as the game entered stoppage time. Ibane’s defence stood firm against the best that the home team threw at then and emerged victorious 2-14 to 1-15. After the game Fergal Keohane of Rebel Og presented the plaque to Ibane captain, Olan O’Donovan who had an outstanding game, outlining all the footballing qualities required of a Cork minor player. It was by no means a one man show, as he had able assistance from Diarmuid Mc Carthy, Ronan Coakley, Charlie Twomey, Joe and James Crowley, Dara Walsh and Daniel Moloney. Team trainers and mentors, Barry Harte, Mark Mythem, Liam Murphy, Tony Crowley and Edward Mc Sweeney were justifiably proud of their charges. John Mc Sweeney was unable to be there as he was enjoying a well- earned holiday in Lanzarote but he kept up to date with happenings via Twitter – the wonders of modern technology!
Team: D Lawton, D Coakley, M O’Sullivan, C Coakley, J Crowley, D Mc Carthy, D Moloney, C O’Donovan, R Coakley, C Twomey, O O’Donovan, J Crowley, B Murphy, M Kelly, D Walsh. Subs: C Hennessy, J Twomey.
After the presentation, it was jokingly pointed out that firm friendship would have to be parked for an hour later that evening as Argideen and Barryroe did battle in the opening game of the West-Cork Junior Football Championship at Kilbrittain but regardless of the result it would revert back to one big happy Ibane family after the game and normal relations would resume.
