JAFC
July 26, 2022
The second game of the JAFC round robin group took place last Saturday evening in Newcestown. Argideen Rangers opened brightly against reigning champions Tadhg Mac Carthaigh and Andrew Guinivan set up the opening two points from play, with assists for Lorcan O Leary and Fergal Walsh. Despite playing into the wind, Argideen controlled the game for long periods and played some purposeful counter attacking football, with Finbarr Butler, Sean Maxwell, Matthew Lawton and Darragh Holland surging forward at every opportunity. Lorcan O Leary and Seán Walsh were lively and threatening and the outlook was promising despite trailing by 5 points to 4 at half time. Disaster struck just after the half time interval as a 45m kick was not dealt with, and was prodded to the Argideen net. However, Timoleague rallied again to dominate the last quarter and began to reel in the 5point deficit. Bill Fleming, Cathal O' Donovan, Eoin Lawton and Ger Crowley took the game to the opposition. Some great scores from play by Seán Maxwell and from frees and play by Bill Fleming reduced the deficit to 2 points approaching injury time. Try as they might, they could not repeat the late scoring heroics of last week and both sides finished with eight scores each. The goal by the reigning champions proved the difference as they won 1-07 to 0-8. A full report on this game appears in the sports section in this edition.
