Our Lady’s Well
August 15th. the feast of The Assumption has always had a special significance with Our Lady’s Well in Timoleague. Over many generations people have come to pray at The Well and while the crowds may not be as large as by gone days yet a steady stream of worshipers visited during the day and there was a fine crowd in the afternoon sunshine for The Rosary and Benediction with Fr. Hickey PP officiating.
Festival
Timoleague Festival was officially opened on Sunday night last. This year the honour of declaring the festival open fell to Cork Penny Dinners CEO, Catriona Twomey. She spoke of the great community involvement in the festival and remarked that at Cork Penny Dinners there is also a great family and community spirit. This is a priceless resource she added and the success of both is attributable to the work of countless people at Timoleague Harvest Festival and at Cork Penny Dinners.
The Children’s Fancy Dress got the evening off to a great start and parents and children entered into to the spirit of the occasion and the number of entrants was up significantly on former years. The organisers were well pleased with the large crowd at music on the streets on Saturday night.
On Monday night Diarmuid Kingston and Donal Whooley conducted a walking tour of the village with particular emphasis on The War of Independence and Timoleague’s involvement. A very large crowd were treated to a vast treasure of local happenings and the people directly associated with this most important period of Irish history.
On Thursday night there is a concert at the parish church with Mike Denver. Food stalls will be on the streets on Friday night. Later there is Festival Bingo in the hall and Gerald Ahern and The Old Moderns will provide the entertainment on the street.
On Saturday night Timoleague resident Caitlin Ruth and Siobhan O’Mahony will present “Host” in the Hall. This event will remove the stress associated with holding a house party. It’s a first for Timoleague and tickets can be had by contacting the following numbers (086)8336315; (086)2465876 or (085)1657801.
Music on the street will be provided by Pat Fitz.
On Sunday afternoon at 3pm a dog show will be held at Abbeyside. An afternoon Tea Dance with music by Tim Joe & Ann O’Riordan will take place at The Hall from 3-6pm.
The final event of the festival will be the adult Fancy Dress Parade through the village and this is always never fails to entertain.
Ahawadda Ambush
On Saturday afternoon last a plaque was unveiled at Ahawadda where three RIC men were ambushed and killed on 10th of May 1920.Those killed were Sgt. John Flynn, Constable Edward Dunne and Constable William Brick. Relatives of all three men were in attendance. A full account of this event will appear later.
Open Day at The Church of the Ascension
There will be an open day at the Church of the Ascension, Timoleague on Saturday next Aug. 20th. from 11am to 5pm. Finola Finlay of Roaring Water Journal will give two talks on the stained glass in the church, one at 12 noon and the other at 2.30pm. Keith Starr of Heatherstone Building and Conservation who are responsible for the fine restoration work will be on hand to explain the work completed and that which is yet to be undertaken. Light refreshments will be served throughout the day.
