Duck Race
The eagerly awaited Duck Race, organised by Timoleague tidy towns took place on Saturday evening last at 7pm. Glorious sunshine graced the wonderful occasion and a large crowd gathered to view the novel water event. Local volunteers sat by the water’s edge on Saturday morning and afternoon to sell the remaining ducks for the race. A number of locals in kyachs and boats saw to it that everything ran smooth. The ducks were released just up river from Church Bridge and the tide which was on the turn at that hour of the evening assisted the ducks as they made their way to the finish line near the now almost disappeared old slip way.
The following duck owners were among the lucky prize winners.
1st. Humphrey Colemanand Kathleen Finn
2nd. Robert Leahy and Mary Mc Sweeney.
3rd. Hannah Sexton and Linda Simcock.
The organising committee would like to thank all who contributed to this successful fundraiser – those who sold and bought ducks; those who took to the water to assist with the race and all those who came along on the day to add to the atmosphere of the occasion. The funds generated will cover the cost of insurance for the pontoon and other costs associated with this beautiful water facility which continues to attract more boating enthusiasts and is growing in popularity. It is indeed a much- admired water facility as one enters Timoleague with the picturesque back-drop of Timoleague Abbey nearby.
Camogie Final
There was divided loyalty in many Timoleague homes last week-end when Kilbrittain/Timoleague took on Barryroe in the West-Cork under 13 camogie final played at Kilbrittain on Sunday morning last. Kilbrittain/Timoleague held the upper hand in the first half and went in 1-4 to 0-2 at half time. Barryroe came more into the game in the second half as expected, but in the end, Kilbrittain/Timoleague finished the stronger and won 3-5 to 1-4.
Julie Cunningham and Aine Walsh played on the Kilbrittain/Timoleague side while Cliona Harte, Fiona Walsh, Shona Walsh and Mary-Ann Keohane wore the blue of Barryroe. Well done to all the Timoleague girls involved.
Centenary of An Garda Siochana
The centenary of An Garda Siochana (1922-2022) was celebrated in Dublin last week-end. Local man Liam Ryan accompanied by John Mullins of Clonakilty represented the West-Cork branch of the GSRMA (Retired Gardai) at the ceremonies at Dublin Castle on Saturday last. The gardai have played a pivotal role in all communities in the state since the force was established after The Civil War in 1922. Many local young men and women are presently serving and others have served in the force in its first hundred years. Indeed, we have been privileged to have had one of our own, Fachtna Murphy of Killavarrig rise to the highest rank within the force, that of Garda Commissioner. It was indeed a proud day for all past and present members of the force and their families as the centenary of An Garda Siochana was officially celebrated.
