Social Outing
Timoleague Farmers- Ploughing Association hold an annual outing which is eagerly looked forward to. However, with the restrictions imposed by covid, it didn’t take place over the past few years. All that changed earlier this month when the bus pulled up at The Abbey Car-Park. Some forty happy travellers boarded the vehicle and headed for road. First stop was The Clonakilty Blackpudding Company Visitors Centre. There, all were given a tour, detailing he history of the company from humble beginnings to the thriving enterprise that it is today. The visit was enhanced further when the owner Colette Twomey joined with the group for a chat and some banter. Next stop was a tour of The Carbery Group Plant at Ballineen. There all were made welcome and were taken on a guided tour of the modern cheese making plant which is owned by the four West-Cork Co-Ops. After a welcomed lunch, the bus headed for Beal na mBlath where local historian Diarmuid Kingston gave a detailed talk of the events leading up to the death of Michael Collins on the 22nd. of August 1922. Later that evening the outing was rounded off with a gathering at The Brewery Bar comprising of ceol,ol agus craic.
Corinthian Challenge Success
There was great rejoicing at the Butler Equine Headquarters at Cregane on Saturday last when Fiona Dowling rode Vera Verto to victory at Leopardstown. The Gavin Cromwell trained horse won by 5 lengths at a price of 15/2. The second placed horse also had a local connection being ridden by Joan Tyner of Innishannon. This was the third leg of a series of races called the Corinthian Challenge. All races had a field of fourteen and the first was held at The Curragh in early Summer with Fiona riding one of Gordan Elliott’s horses. The second took place at Gowran Park when she had the mount of one of the Harty horses. and the final one was run at Leopardstown on Saturday last. The jockeys who took part had to raise €10,000. The money raised is donated to the injured jockeys fund which does such fantastic work in raising awareness in support of riders who are suffering from mental and physical injury and illness.
Fiona who is a native of Listowel is presently working at the Racing School in Kildare. She was at the Gordan Elliott yard in the very beginning of that success story. She had a certain Silver Birch in her care back in 2007 when Gordan Elliott had his first major success with victory in the Grand National at Aintree in the hands of Robbie Power.
