Argideen Rangers AGM
The annual general meeting of Argideen Rangers GAA club was held at Timoleague Community Hall recently. A large attendance was welcomed by chairperson, Denis O’Leary. He thanked everyone who helped to make the 2022 season such a success. While the West-Cork football title was not won, nonetheless it was pleasing to reach the final in that competition for the first time since 1994. Fundraising was undertaken once more after recent restrictions and the chairman thanked all who made the various fundraising activities so successful.
The outgoing secretary Aidan Harte in a detailed written report outlined the playing activity of the various teams during the past season. He outlined the games played by the team in the premier junior hurling league and championship. While overall victory was not achieved in league or championship, yet the team and supporters and management can be well pleased with their effort throughout the season.
The junior footballers were grouped with Barryroe, Bandon and Tadgh Mac Carthaig. This championship grouping was memorable to say the least. While off the field affairs saw the outcome delayed, Argideen qualified from the group and made it to the final after great games against Randal Og and Tadgh Mac Carthaig (for the second time), where Ardfield awaited. This game was played in Ahiohill and Argideen came out second best. This was a major disappointment but getting to the final was progress. Also winning the league was another positive and as a result Argideen will compete in division 7 of the county board run football league in 2023. This is also a step in the right direction. This will mean that the hurlers and footballers will play a total of 16 games, (7 football and 9 hurling) between the last week of March and the final week of June. This will result in a football and hurling game every second week during that period.
Special mention was made of the success of the junior “C “hurling team who won that championship with a 3-11 to 3-8 victory over Kilbrittain in the final. The club also fielded a second junior football team for the first time in quite a while.
The success of Ibane Gaels was also highlighted and all can be well satisfied with the past season. The Rebel Bounty Draw together with the golf outing and race night received welcome comment. The club also ran a very enjoyable quiz night with proceeds going to the Festival Committee.
Aidan also referenced the weekly club lotto which provides the main source of income to the club. He thanked the faithful organisers who do duty each Sunday night and he appealed to others to consider helping out during the year ahead.
Club referees, Seamus Crowley and Alan Long were thanked for their sterling work during the year. Alan was congratulated on being chosen to referee the County Senior Football Final and his trusted officiating team of Crowleys, namely, Seamus, Ogie and Tadgh and their nephew Christy. Well done all.
The treasurer Donie O’Callaghan also gave an in -depth report on the financial state of affairs. Considering the expense involved, it was indeed heartening that there is a still money in the kitty.
