Hurling league win

April 18, 2023

Dungourney was the venue for last Sunday morning's Red FM Division 5 hurling league match. The home side, county champions last year and two championship grades above Argideen Rangers, started well and were 7 points to 2 up after 15 mins. Both Timoleague scores came from Cathal O' Donovan - one was a superb sideline cut and the other a point from play. A brave run by Finbarr Butler earned a penalty and John Michael O' Callaghan placed the dead ball in the top left corner of the net to spark life into the team's performance. Further points from Cathal and Darragh O' Donovan reduced the deficit. A well taken Finbar Butler goal levelled the game just before half time as the home side were reduced to 14 men after an off the ball incident.

Argideen continued to pile on the pressure after half time with further points from O' Callaghan and led by 6 points. Dungourney came back into the game with some great scores from distance. The match had a real championship intensity to it and the debatable umpiring decisions added to the drama. A long range Dungourney free was adjudged to have been carried over the line and, with time almost up, the sides were level. After some more heroic defending from Darragh Holland, Bill Fleming and Sean Henchion, the ball found its way to John Michael O' Callaghan who coolly slotted over the winning point as the side remained unbeaten and top of the table after four games.

Team; John Joe Butler, Sean Henchion, Ger Crowley, Bill Fleming, Darragh Holland, Matthew Lawton, Andrew Guinevan, Conor Lehane, Cathal O' Donovan, Finbarr Butler, John Michael O' Callaghan, Sean Maxwell, Darragh O' Donovan, Joe Murphy and Philip O' Flynn. Sub used; Paudie Butler. That game marked the first of four league matches over fourteen days for these players. The footballers will have played Ardfield by the time you have read these notes in a rescheduled county football league game. An away trip to Ballyclough on Sunday 23rd at 11:30am is next followed by hurling against Ballygiblin on April 29th.
