Hurling win
September 04, 2023
Argideen Rangers beat Glen Rovers last Friday night in the Premier Junior Hurling Championship in Ballincollig. However it was heartbreak for the players and management at the final whistle as, despite the win, they exited the competition. After three teams finished level in the group on four points, scoring difference saw Glen Rovers (+5) and Erin's Own (+5) progress at the expense of Argideen (+4). Argideen had the better of the opening exchanges and were leading by three points in the opening quarter. A preventable goal before half time meant the Glen led by 1-07 to 0-7 at the break. However it was all Argideen in the second half as they took a four point lead with 10 minutes to go courtesy of some great scores by Paudie Butler, John Michal O' Callaghan, Conor Lehane and Finbarr Butler. With time almost up the Glen were awarded a dubious free and converted to ensure their passage to the quarter final, despite the 0-17 to 2-10 Argideen win. The players and management can feel justifiably proud of their efforts and 2023 season and have plenty to build on in 2024. Team; John Sheehan, Andrew Guinevan, Ger Crowley, Bill Fleming, Cathal O’Donovan, Matthew Lawton, Conor Lehane, Darragh Holland, Philip Flynn, John Michael O’Callaghan, Paudie Butler, Sean Maxwell; Finbarr Butler, Joe Murphy, Lorcan O’Leary.
Subs used: Billy Foley, Darragh O’Donovan, Sean Henchion and Colin Smith.
The players will have little time to dwell on the situation as their final football game takes place on Saturday 9th at 6:30 in Clonakilty. Kilmeen are the opposition with the winner progressing out of the group.
