Community notes November 4th

Abbey Street Resurfaced
Abbey Street was resurfaced last week. This was the last remaining street in the village to be given a face lift. Main Street, Mill Street and Mill Hill have already been done and Abbey Street was in a terrible condition in comparison to the others. Men with giant machines were on site last Wednesday morning to begin the job. The existing surface was removed, and in its place a fine thick quantity of tarmacadam was put down. The street was closed off while work was in progress and it was reopened for traffic over the week-end.
New Stone Plinths
The four mounted plaques which are on the grass verge between the road and the foreshore with the Abbey as a backdrop have also been upgraded and that work was completed last week. This project was first undertaken by Timoleague Tidy Towns a number of years ago. However, over time it was felt that stone plinths would be more in keeping with The Abbey in such close proximity. Cathal Dineen of Coolim Construction was engaged to carry out the project. The stone work was done by Paul Maxwell, father of Argideen Rangers star player Sean. The four plaques are now in position and are a credit to all involved. The first plaque traces the relationship between bee keeping and Saint Molaga. The second one gives an insight of the varied bird life of the Argideen Estuary. The third plaque touches on the history of the Abbey and the fourth is about The School of Philosophy associated with The Abbey. The finished product has received much favourable comment from both visitors and locals alike.

Argideen Rangers are holding their annual race night on Saturday, November 25th next at Pad Joe’s Bar. This is a key fundraiser for the club and supporters and friends of Argideen Rangers are asked to take note of the date.

A walkway around the perimeter of Our Lady’s Well Sports Complex is proving very popular with walkers and amblers. This walkway has now been enhanced further with the erection of lights on the route. The lights were officially switched on Monday evening last at 5pm. This coincided with an official end of season for Argideen Rangers underage section. There was an end of year party held at 3.30pm. A BBQ was also on offer and young players, parents, trainers and mentors gathered to officially close the 2023 season.
