Timmy Harrington RIP
There was widespread regret in Timoleague and its environs following the death of Timmy Harrington. The Carhue native was a most affable character who also possessed a streak of loveable roguery. He was an integral part of the local community and was well known in the sporting world of West Cork. Timmy was one of a family of seven, born to Denis and Ellen in 1938. He took the boat to England in 1965 like many other local young men and women before him. He was employed in the building industry mainly but also worked in a motor parts factory. England was not for Timmy with the pull of West-Cork being too strong. He returned in time for the glory days of the Timoleague footballers and hurlers in 1967. The club was reformed with Timoleague winning the double in its first year back. Timmy played his part in the midst of that famous team.
He also married his Barryroe sweetheart, Mary Motherway in that action packed year. Indeed, he wasn’t the only member of that team that went south for a bride! He joined the staff of Barryroe Co-Op in 1968 and was a loyal employee at the Inchybridge branch until his retirement in 2003. During his time there he endeared himself to all the customers and banter, laughter and work were intertwined in his daily routine. Timmy and Mary reared a family of seven, five boys and two girls in the family home at Carhue.
GAA, road bowling and horseracing were among his favourite sports. He was immensely proud of his 1967 medals won with Timoleague. He was a permanent fixture at the gate at Our Lady’s Well Sports Complex when Argideen Rangers hosted championship games. He knew everyone and his sharp wit was audible as he accorded a warm welcome to all who entered the grounds. He was well known on the bowling roads of Carbery and he was the proud holder of a West Cork Junior Title. He had a life- long interest in horseracing and a week would not be fully complete without himself and his good friend, the late Seamus Whelton going to Clon every Thursday for “the messages” and availing of the opportunity of placing a bet or two, as they were in town! He was an expert gardener and he was also a beautiful waltzer. He was universally popular and never reneged “the noble call” during a sing song. Mary and himself loved a night out socialising in the village among friends. Two things he didn’t like – flying and entering the sea but he got on famously without either.
The large and diverse attendance at his removal and his burial was ample evidence of Timmy’s popularity. Ni bheidh a leitheid ann aris. Sympathy was extended to his wife Mary, his daughters Ella and Niamh, sons, Fergus, Aidan, Rory, Niall and Gearoid and their extended families and to his sister Sheila and brothers Dan and John and their families. Ar dheis De go raibh se.
Ireland Lights Up
In partnership with RTE’s Operation Transformation and Get Ireland Walking, GAA clubs will ensure ‘Ireland Lights Up’ by turning on their floodlights and hosting community walking groups during the broadcast period of the hit RTÉ show. Argideen Rangers aims to make exercise more accessible on the dark winter nights and to offer our local community an opportunity to get together and socialise in a healthy way.
Everyone is welcome to join us every Monday night at 7:30pm at the Timoleague Community Grounds (GAA Pitch). Bring the whole family along. An indication of the popularity of the event was very evident on Monday night last, Jan. 8th when approximately 100 people took part. The new safe, fully lit walking track around the sports grounds was looking its best with weather conditions on the crisp side as people of all ages and abilities entered into the spirit of the occasion.
