Community notes March 9th

March 19, 2024

Timoleague NS Caring for the Environment:

Timoleague National School is through to the ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards ECO-Dens Semi-Finals for their work in the Timoleague Educational Garden. ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalist Awards (YEA) is an All-Ireland environmental awards programme that recognises and rewards young people who raise environmental awareness and improve the environment. The YEA programme is an exciting way to empower young people to become better citizens, to build awareness of environmental issues in their community and promote local actions and lifestyle changes to the environment. The ECO-Dens are regional “Dragons’ Den” style semi-final judging events where the school's YEA group will be given the opportunity to pitch their environmental action project, Timoleague Educational Garden, to a panel of expert judges in Cork before the Easter break.

They carry the best wishes of all as they showcase their great work in The Timoleague Educational Garden

Birdwatch Ireland Outing at Timoleague:

Timoleague Educational Garden teamed up with Birdwatch Ireland, West Cork on Sunday last to host a most enjoyable event as up to sixty people gathered near the mudflats at The Argideen Estuary. Armed with binoculars the bird enthusiasts were treated a wonderful show as there was a plentiful display of waders, ducks, divers and as a treat to round off a perfect morning, a kingfisher was spotted observing all from its perch on the stone wall near the bridge.

After spending some time in Timoleague, many took a stroll down the estuary walk where there was no shortage of birds on display. The amateurs among the group availed of the information on the many plinths on display as they walked along the old railway line that wound its way towards Courtmacsherry.

When the group had their fill of the local birdlife on the estuary waters, they received a royal welcome and were treated to a much- needed hot cup of tea at The Timoleague Educational Garden. Afterwards they were given a guided tour of this wonderful local amenity.
