Addressed Ard Fheis:
John Michael Foley of Timoleague spoke at the 82nd. Fine Gael Ard Fheis held at NUIG on Saturday last. He proposed a motion calling on the government to recognise and support the extremely important work carried out by carers and to introduce a Transition Year module at post primary schools highlighting the role that carers play in our society. John Michael who is a candidate in the forthcoming local elections in the Bandon-Kinsale area, spoke to a packed auditorium on the importance of carers in our society who tirelessly devote themselves to the well-being of others ranging from caring for the sick, the elderly and those with specific needs.
Drawing from his own personal family experience, he spoke passionately on the vital role of carers and further stated that the introduction of this new school subject in Transition Year would provide students with a fundamental understanding of its importance. This new addition to the curriculum he statedwould not only educate students about the practical aspects of caring but would also foster empathy, compassion and a sense of responsibility towards those in need. It will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively support and assist individuals who require care and attention. It will help to break down stereotypes and stigmas surrounding these groups in fostering a society where every individual is valued and treated with dignity and respect, regardless of age or ability.
In conclusion, he reminded his audience of the need to recognise the extraordinary work of carers and the profound impact that they have on the lives of others. Our youth have to be empowered to become advocates for care and compassion.
His motion was seconded by Colette Twomey and was unanimously carried. Chairperson of the panel was Colm Burke TD Cork North Central who was joined at the top table by Hildegarde Naughton TD Galway West, Regina Doherty TD and Senator Martin Conway.
