Sciath na Scol Final
There was great rejoicing in Timoleague hurling circles last week as Timoleague National School qualified for the Sciath na Scol Hurling final that will be played on Tuesday May 21st. at Pairc Ui Rinn at 12 noon.Their opponents will be Scoil na nOg Glanmire. Last week they travelled to Dungourney in East Cork to take on the locals in their own back yard in the semi-final and at the end, the two evenly balanced teams could not be separated during normal time. Extra time was need and after a pulsating extra period of hurling the Timoleague lads won the day with a two-point victory. Master Mennis and the lads are wished well in the final.
On hearing the great news our minds went back to the glorious Summer of 1992 when Scoil Molaga won a unique double at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. The lads qualified for the final and played Crossmahon. The year before they qualified for their first final but were agonisingly beaten by Ballinspittle National School by a point. This time armed with that invaluable experience they overcame Crossmahon, 2-5 to 1-3 to take the title for the first time. Inspiring team captain Michael O’Callaghan, mid-field general Brian Hennessy, skillful full-forward Damien Crowley and that little pocket-rocket Denis Harrington were leading lights on a wonderful team with wing back David Twomey giving a man-of-the-match performance. Team: Alan long, Dan Connolly, Paul O’Donovan, Michael O’Callaghan, David Twomey, Brian Hennessy, Cathal Dineen, Ronan O’Sullivan, Valerie O’Keeffe, Denis Harrington, Damien Crowley. Subs: Paddy Drake, Rowan O’Donovan, Conor Hennessy, Pascal Kingston, Mark Vaughan, Freddy Murphy.
A few weeks later it was the turn of the girls to achieve the second leg of the double. The girls were very envious of the boys as they were travelling all over the county playing games. The girls were entered in the camogie competition for the first time that year and they trained with the lads. They were given a lesson by Barryroe in an early round game but they were quick learners. They won all their remaining games and qualified to meet Barryroe in the final. This time they were determined to rectify the situation. Inspired by Valerie O’Keeffe who played with the boys in the hurling win, they totally dominated the game and surprised many with an emphatic 4-1 to 0-0 win to record a never to be forgotten double at PaircUiChaoimh. Team: Fiona O’Rourke, Shirley Harrington, Mairead Hayes, Valerie O’Keeffe (Capt.), Siobhan Murphy, Lisa Harrington, Ella Harrington, Caroline O’Leary, Carol Kingston. Subs: Edel Foley, Pamela O’Donovan, Iris Mc Sweeney, Fiona Hayes, Lisa Vaughan, Irene O’Mahony.
