Kate Fleming Communication Award:
The annual Kate Fleming Communication award was held at Timoleague National School recently. This competition is eagerly looked forward to each year by the senior pupils at the school. It commemorates the memory of the late Kate Fleming of Barryshall who was a former pupil of the school. This year, the adjudicator, Mrs. Noreen Minihan of Clonakilty awarded the honour after some keen competition to Maggie Foley of Mill Street. Maggie is daughter of Denise and John Michael. At a very pleasant function at the school, Kate’s parents Kathleen and Peter presented Maggie with her award. Also present was Maggie’s teacher Mairead Crowley.

Micheal Holland RIP:
It was with great sadness that the news of the death of Micheal Holland was heard, back in his native village. Micheal was born and reared in the licensed premises operated by his father, Dan Holland at the corner of Mill Street and Abbey Street. Dan was a native of Barryroe and took an active part in The War of Independence. The young Micheal showed promise as a sportsman and this was further enhanced during his secondary education at St. Augustine’s College, Dungarvan. Such was his prowess as a footballer that he gained a place on the Cork minor team in 1954, occupying the corner back position. Interesting to note that two other natives of the parish were also involved in that team. Dan Murphy of Carrig played in the other corner and Jerry Harte of Ahaliskey, who was playing with Bandon at the time also played. Not bad going for a country parish! Kerry defeated them in the Munster final. Micheal was one of Timoleague’s best players back then, though the local team was not exactly blazing a trail at the time. St. Molaga’s did manage to contest the Junior “B” final in ’54 but were defeated by Carbery Rangers 1-6 to 0-4 in Clon with Micheal lining out at full forward. He played with Carbery in the senior championship against St.Finbarr’s the following year. The club went into decline and did not affiliate between ’57 and ’66 with many of the lads playing with various local clubs.Micheal played football with Clonakilty and hurling with Kilbrittain. When his playing days were over, employment took him back to Dungarvan where he settled, enjoying a long and successful life in The Deise. The Gaels of his native Timoleague extend sympathy to his wife Anne and to his daughters, Natalie, Aisling, Naomi and son Daniel and the extended Holland family. Ar dheis De go raibh se.
Golden Jubilee Celebration:
Fr. John Kingston celebrated his Golden Jubilee in Timoleague on Thursday night last with mass at the parish church followed by a reception at The Community Hall. The church was full and there was standing room only at the hall. Relatives, friends, neighbours and parishioners all gathered on the night to celebrate with Fr. John on the occasion of his long ministry of service to God and The Church. He is wished well by all as he continues his priestly duties into the future.
