A commemoration ceremony will take place at Clogagh on Saturday, September 28th after the 6pm mass. A plaque will be unveiled to three local men who all attended Clogagh National School andwere killed during The Troubles, namely Thomas Hennessy, Cornelius Daly and Daniel O’Donovan. An active local history committee have bein working on this project for some time. A special guest, who has attained high office and who has youthful ties with Clogagh will be on hand to do the honours on the night. An open invitation is extended to all to attend.
Thomas Hennessy was born in Skeaf. He attended Clogagh NS where he was a brilliant pupil. He attended Veterinary College but had to return home to take over the family farm on the sudden death of his brother. He was a member of The Gaelic League and was secretary of Ballycatten Harrier Club. After the death of his wife, who was a native of Newcestown, he sold the farm and he and his children moved to Crosshaven. During a raid on the property of his employer by British soldiers, he was severely wounded and diedon the 13th. of March 1921.There was much controversy surrounding his death. He was interred with his wife in Newcestown.
Cornelius Daly also known as Corney was born in Shannonvale in 1899. On the death of his father at a young age, the family moved to Carrig to live with his grandfather. He worked at Thomas O’Leary’s Flax Mill at Castleview. He joined The Clogagh Company of The Irish Volunteers and was in active service with Tom Barry and The Flying Column of The Third West Cork Brigade at Crossbarry. Sadly, he was one of three volunteers killed during the ambush on the 10th. of March 1921. He was buried in the Republican Plot at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Bandon alongside his two other fallen comrades.
Daniel O’Donovan, aClogagh native was born in 1888 and attended the local national school. He joined The Clogagh Company of The Irish Volunteers and took part in Crossbarry Ambush. He was considered a free spirit and climbed to the top of Timoleague Castle, while occupied by British soldiers, to remove The Union Jack. He was accidentally killed during the blowing up of Timoleague Bridge by anti-treaty troops on the 4th. of October 1922. After the explosion part of the bridge was still intact and Daniel got in a small boat and tried to remove the keystone with a crowbar when it suddenly collapsed on top of him. His body was found some months later by Burren Pier and he is buried at Clogagh Cemetery.
Hurling
Argideen Rangers beat Douglas last Saturday evening in the Premier Junior relegation play off. This important win secures the club's status in this grade. The Timoleague men started like a train and raced into a6point to 1 lead after 15 minutes. Some solid goalkeeping from John Sheehan, good delivery from midfielders Conor Lehane and John Michael O ' Callaghan and a booming point by wingback Daniel Hurley were the opening quarter highlights. However, Douglas came back into the game and, thanks mainly to placed balls, led before halftime, despite some excellent defending by Darragh Holland. Argideen managed to score two quick points from Darragh O' Donovan and Seán Maxwell to lead 9-8 at the short whistle. While it was nip and tuck in the third quarter with the scores deadlocked at 0-12 each, Pádraig Butler began to exert his influence on the game. He won puck out after puck out much to the delight of the large Timoleague support. His two superb long -range points were part of a four-point surge that was the winning of the game. Douglas did their level best to rescue the game but Jim Foley, Diarmuid Corcoran, Mikey Walsh and Dec Crowley are to be commended for their dedication and commitment. The last two championship performances are something that can be built on for 2025. On Sunday in Newcestown, the minor hurlers played the Rebel Og West Division 1 Hurling Championship Final against Ballinora.
