Regretted Death of John Sexton
The recent death of John Sexton was deeply regretted not only in his native Courtmacsherry, but also in Barryroe and Timoleague and throughout West-Cork. He was deeply involved in his local community at all levels during his long life. His attention to detail and his great recall were just two of his many attributes. He followed in his father’s footsteps in his life long association with Irish Ploughing. He joined the Timoleague Ploughing Association in his youth and was an integral part of each annual ploughing match. In 2005 he wrote “70 Years A-Growing” - A History of Timoleague Ploughing. He was a prolific wielder of the pen and wrote the Timoleague and Courtmacsherry Notes in this newspaper for a record number of years. The present writer of the Timoleague Notes benefited greatly from his words of wisdom and from his continued encouragement. The large crowd that attended his funeral was ample testament to the esteem in which he was held by so many. To his devoted wife Betty, his three daughters, four sons and their extended families and to his brother Fr. Tom OSA sympathy is extended. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
Divided Family
The All- Ireland Senior Club Hurling final played at Croke Park on Sunday afternoon last, caused a loyalty divide in a Timoleague family. When Na Fianna and Sarsfields of Glanmire qualified for the hurling show piece, two Whooley brothers, Kevin and Gregory were in opposite camps. Kevin is a life long member of Sarsfields since himself and his wife Barbara first moved to live in Glanmire. In fact, Kevin served as a selector and officer with the club. Meanwhile Gregory since his move to the capital as a member of the civil service and his subsequent marriage to Ann, settled in the Glasnevin area and became a member of The Na Fianna club based at Mobhi Road. Gregory has also served as an officer and hurling selector with Na Fianna and presently acts as a steward at Croke Park. Bragging rights to Greg, but Kevin, the drinks are on him!

There will be an interesting talk by Maeve Kelly in The Educational Garden, Timoleague on Thursday January 30th. at 7.30pm in The Cabin. Maeve’s talk is called “Mind Your Feet”. The Donegal born lady is a foot healthcare practitioner. She operates a clinic at The Skibbereen Therapy Centre and she also attends Bushmount Nursing Home each Friday. During her talk she will focus on common foot ailments and how best to care for one’s feet.
Local Sports Stars
Clonakilty Community College beat St. Augustine’s College, Dungarvan 3-19 to 2-16 in the Munster Senior Hurling quarter final. Local players, Joe and James Crowley along with Robert and Kevin Hennessy were on the team. Meanwhile, Hamilton High School had a great victory over Pobal Scoil Chorcha Dhuibhine of Dingle, 2-14 to 0-11 in the Corn Ui Mhuiri quarter final. On this team, Charlie and Jack Twomey along with Dara Walsh and Donagh Flynn were very much to the fore. Dara Walsh to emphasise his versatility, played at full back on the Hamilton High School senior rugby team that were defeated 29-17 by rugby powerhouse, St. Munchin’s in The Munster Senior Cup. Jack Deasy came off the bench to help Bandon Grammar School defeat Glenstal Abbey 35-03 at Virginia Media Park in the same competition.
Just to emphasise that it isn’t all male dominated, local girls Molly Twomey, Ellen Foley and Marianne Keohane were on the Carbery under 15 camogie team last week-end. Juliet Harte, Niamh Doyle and Aoife Harte were on the Carbery under 14 team.
Cliona Harte is congratulated on her selection on the Cork under 16 “A” camogie panel for 2025. Timoleague has a proud record of camogie players on Cork teams and Cliona is following on the footsteps of some great players.
