Local Rugby Success
Bandon Grammar School recently won the Munster Schools Junior Cup for the first time. They defeated CBC, 20 - 12 in the final at Virgin Media Park amid great excitement. Shane Murphy of Abbeymahon had an outstanding game at flanker and put his school on the front foot by taking a quick tap and go penalty to crash over for the first try of the game after nine minutes. Shane’s mother Fiona (nee O’Leary) hails from Thornhill, Conna and her mother Margaret was born and grew up in Abbeymahon.Shane’s father, Brian hails from Limerick, also noted for its rugby. Across the road is the Smith family home at Cregane, another residence steeped in the rugby tradition. Shane is congratulated as he now moves up to senior ranks next season. The captain of the victorious team was Mark Whelton of Bandon, who played in the second row. The Whelton surname is popular in the Timoleague area and his father is Aidan Whelton who was born and raised in Timoleague. Mark’s grandparents, Micheal and Eileen still live in the family home at Chapel Avenue. Mark’s mother is Janette Walton, sister of Simon of Charlie Madden’s Bar, another former rugby great. Mark is also wished well in his future rugby career.
A number of local girls were also part of recent rugby success - not letting the lads take all the lime-light. Sacred Heart Secondary School, Clonakilty won the Munster Schools Junior Rugby Cup beating ColaistePobal, Bantry in the final, 19-7 at Virgin Media Park. Seodhna Walsh of Maryborough, daughter of Finbarr and Siobhan, Sinead O’Callaghan of Ardmore, daughter of Paul and Karen and Julie Cunningham of Ballincoursey, daughter of Martin and Hilda were on the winning team. All three girls can trace a proud sporting lineage in their respective families. The girls are wished well as they now move up to the senior team.
