KWD Spring Clean
The annual clean up sponsored by KWD took place on last week-end. The number of people who turned up was fantastic and judging by the vast amount of red plastic bags that were filled to the brim would seem to indicated that the approach roads and the streets contained a lot of litter that many were not even aware of. Anyway, a great start has been made and the officers of the localTidy Towns Association wish to thank all those who participated in the clean-up on Friday night and Saturday morning. The weekly “meitheal” continues each Tuesday night with volunteers meeting at The Abbey Car-Park at 7pm.
Bowling News
The South West Road Bowling Festival will take place on the Cloughgriffin and Barryshall roads from Holy Thursday to Easter Monday.
On Thursday and Friday Scores will begin at Lawton’s Cross and on Saturday to Easter Monday scores will be between Bateman’s Hill to The Hegarty Monument, Barryshall.
Parking will be in the fields at both ends and all are welcome.
Cork Ladies Football Success
The Cork Ladies Under 14 football team had a great victory in The Munster Final on Wednesday night last. They defeated Clare, 1-10 to 1-6 in the final which was played in Brosna, Co Kerry. Five young girls, Kay Collins, Niamh Doyle, Aoife Harte, Aibhlin Mc Carthy and Aoife Walsh from the Ibane Ladies Football club were very much to the fore in this great victory. Also deserving of special mention is Mary Harrington who was one of the selectors. Fresh from their success in Munster they now qualify for The All-Ireland Quarter Final which will be played next month.
Tidy Towns Report Contd.
Sustainability – Doing more with less: We commend your efforts in sourcing recycled material where possible. We noted that the furniture in the centre of the village is made from recycled material in addition to the furniture at the entrance to the playground and under the Abbey at the picnic area.
Tidiness and Litter Control: The village was clean and litter free on the day of our visit. The recycling area and litter bins are also well presented with no signs of overflow. You are proactive throughout the year in anti-litter initiatives. These include the Cork County Council litter challenge and the KWD County clean up. We commend the sixth class pupils of the school on receiving a green flag for Global Citizenship Litter and Waste. We noted that each school class litter picks around the village and facilitates battery collections. Additionally, we noted the anti-dog fowling signs throughout the area.
Residential Streets & Housing Areas: All of the residential houses were presented to a high standard. The exterior of the buildings was freshly painted with vibrant colourful flowers on display. The village has many eye-catching shop fronts and buildings including Monk’s Lane Restaurant, Dillon's Restaurant, The Post Office and The Garda Station.
