Flax Growing:
Barryroe Co-Op as part of their centenary celebrations will host a talk and discussion on flax growing in West-Cork with particular emphasis in the Barryroe Co-Op area. The development of flax growing and processing began in West-Cork during and immediately after the Second World War. Many young men from Armagh and Monaghan, where there was a long-standing flax growing tradition came south to help establish the industry here. Among the guest speakers will be Kathy Kirwin, an Eco Artist and Flax enthusiast who has researched it in great detail. Dr. Colin Rynne of UCC will also speak. He was written widely and his works include: At the Sign of the Cow-The Cork Butter Market (1769-1924); Industrial Ireland (1750-1930) and The Industrial Heritage of County Cork among other works. Philip O’Regan, a former deputy editor of The Southern Star will also contribute. Philip who has an MA in Local History is presently writing a history of Barryroe Co-Op.
