Community notes June 7th

June 11, 2025

Vista Sign

A new vista sign has been erected near the top of the steps leading to the church. This tidy towns project received a government grant and the artistic work was done by Oksana Vorontovas, a Ukrainian native who lives in Timoleague. The sign in map form contains the main sites visible from the location. All are numbered and named and will become yet another tourist attraction in Timoleague. After the 11.30am mass on Sunday last, Fr. John Kingston blessed the sign and cut the ribbon to officially launch the project. It is hoped that the vista viewing point will become a must-see location for visitors and locals alike.

Lament in Music Form

The famed Caoineadh Thigh Molaga or to give it its proper Irish title, Machtnamh an DuineDhoiliosaigh was given a music rendition and was one of the compositions by Maire Ni Dhuibhir performed in The Sacred Heart Church, Courtmacsherry as part of the Lifeboat Celebrations last week-end. The poem was written by Sean O’Coileain (1754 – 1817), one of Carbery’s foremost poets. He was present at a funeral at The Abbey and laments the destruction of the friary and imagines it as it was in bye gone days. The epic poem has twenty verses with the last few directly referring to the poet’s own failing health and old age. It is often compared toElegy Written in a Country Churchyard by the English poet Thomas Gray (1716 – 1771).

The music to The Caoineadh invoked plain chant and traditional song and was one of nine compositions performed on the evening under the title, Courtmacsherry Rhythms, a suit for soloists, choir, ensemble, piano and traditional instruments. All were composed and directed by Maire Ni Dhuibhir, a proud Courtmacsherry native. Local choir members were joined by Cantairi Chonamara who entertained the large attendance in a most delightful evening of music and song.

Youth Mass

A youth mass will be celebrated in Timoleague parish church on Sunday next, June 8th. at 11.30am.

Tidy Towns

Many people were out and about during the past week helping with Tidy Town work. A number of local projects were completed and members and volunteers are asking the public for one final push to make the village look its best as judging time approaches. Local organisations have also come on board again this year and have done some incredible work. If you feel that you can give some time to this great community, please feel free to join in with the other activists.
