Lamented Death of Donal Holland
There was great sadness in Barryroe and in the Ibane catchment area when news emerged last week of the death of Donal Holland of Lislevane, after a short illness. Donal gave great service to the Barryroe club and was a “true blue”. When Barryroe and Argideen Rangers amalgamated at under age level, Donal was one of a select group who had the foresight to see the bigger picture and was an Ibane Gaels stalwart who gave unwavering service to countless teams that he was involved with. I had the honour of sharing the sideline with an astute tactician who had a special rapport with the young players of Barryroe and Timoleague. He delighted in their progress as players but more importantly, he took great pride in their development into fine young men, who now form the backbone of Argideen and Barryroe adult teams in both football and hurling.
Donal, though totally immersed in gaelic games had his priorities right and he put his sporting commitments on hold to care for his parents in the family home. One would sometimes wonder if there is any justice in this life, but the good Lord obviously had plans for Donal. I can picture him now striding up and down the heavenly pitch directing operations as he always did. He is now re-united with his beloved parents where there is no more pain or suffering. I like to think that he hasn’t left us but has gone on before us. No doubt he will have everything in readiness when our turn comes and we get the “tap on the shoulder”. Ar dheis De go raibh do anam uasal Donal.
