History Lecture
The recently formed Timoleague Historical Society held its first lecture on Wednesday night of last week at Timoleague Community Hall. The presentation on The Ancient Civil Parish of Templequinlan was given by local author and keen historian, Diarmuid Kingston to a large representative gathering. This was a labour of love for the presenter as the ruin of Templequinlan Church and its graveyard are situated across the road from his residence. The civil parish consisted of seven townlands and it stretched from Ballinglanna to Carrig, a distance of some six miles. The graveyard was a bleak place during “Black ‘47” at the height of The Famine. Bodies were carried to the graveyard by donkey and cart and some were carried by sheet by a number of people. The parish suffered an almost 50% decrease in population during the period. Diarmuid also dealt with some of the large country houses of the area and outlined their rich history to his appreciative audience.
Facilitator, Joseph Murphy thanked Diarmuid for his brilliant talk and remarked that we are fortunate to have people like Diarmuid with such a wealth of local history living among us.
Rugby Success
Bandon Grammar School won the Bowen Shield for the first time at Virgin Media Park last week. Having defeated St. Munchin’s 40- 20 in the semi-final they continued that winning form into the final with a fantastic 13-7 victory over CBC in the decider. Local man Bertie Smith, former president of The Munster Branch was on hand to present the shield to the winning captain, Mark Whelton, son of Aidan, formerly of Chapel Avenue. Also, on the podium next to Mark was Jack Deasy of Barryshall, son of David and Una, who also played an outstanding game and to cap a great week for the Deasy family, Paul scored a goal for Hamilton High School in the under 17 Munster Colleges Football final victory over Macroom. All are wished continued success for the season ahead.
Carol Service
The Carol Service held at Timoleague Parish Church on Sunday evening last was a most peaceful and reflective event which showcased the exceptional talent that is available locally. A well supported collection for Doctors Without Borders was held on the night for the people of Gaza. The Parish Council are thankful to all who made the seasonal event so meaningful for the large attendance present.
