Annual Ploughing Match:
The annual Timoleague ploughing match will be held on Sunday next, January 25th. on the lands of The Sexton family at Meelmane, Courtmacsherry. This year will mark the 90th ploughing fixture of the ever-popular Timoleague Ploughing match. Little did the pioneering Timoleague Young Farmers know back in 1936 that the event would still be to the fore and hold a special place among the participants and supporters after all the years.
The idea of holding a ploughing match was considered during a winter agricultural class held in Timoleague in the autumn of 1935. The first ploughing match took place the following January on a thirteen-acre field beside Kilmalooda Church by kind permission of local landowner, John Hennessy. The officers of the organising committee were – Chairman: Frank O’Sullivan, Knockbrown, Secretary: PJ Walsh, Clogagh, Treasurer: Patrick O’Donovan, Carhue. The present organisers are wished the best of weather for this landmark occasion. “God speed the plough”
Tidy Towns Report:
Nature and Biodiversity in your Locality: The Educational Garden is among several new projects that you list. This didn’t exist on our last visit and it is such a gem! It is amazing what you have packed into this little space and it is a lesson to us all that you don’t need acres to make a lot of difference. We enjoyed the information on fungi, water and birds. There is a pollinator area that was being visited by lots of bees on the day and a lovely rain water harvesting system. Wow. congratulations to the National School for all their achievements including the Muintir na Tire award. Well done for getting Birdwatch, Ireland to come along and give a talk and birdwatching pointers. A special mention has to be made for the school garden. This is truly outstanding work. The adjudicator has probably seen hundreds of school gardens but this is up to the very best. It is so creative, interesting and well laid-out. Congratulations to you all.
Ireland Lights Up:
Ireland Lights Up is after starting at Timoleague. If you missed out don’t worry. You can join in with the vast numbers who are partaking each Tuesday night at Our Lady’s Well Sports Complex. All it involves is doing a relaxed walk along the walking track at 7pm every Tuesday night for the next five weeks. This fun exercise event is in its third year and is open to all ages and abilities. Lights will be on in The Astro Pitch for about forty minutes each evening for children to play while parents are walking. Helmets are advised if children are playing hurling.
