Community notes March 21st

March 22, 2026

Daffodil Day 2026

Daffodil Day is the Irish Cancer Society’s National Fundraiser. This year it will take place on Friday March 20th. This annual event turns communities across Ireland yellow in colour to raise crucial funds to support cancer patients and their families. It also raises much needed funding for vital cancer research.

Donation boxes will be in Timoleague at the village centre and at Centra. If you wish you may donate on line at https://fundraise.cancer/fundraisers/TimoleagueDaffodilDay2026 A coffee morning and cake sale will be held at Timoleague Community Hall on Sunday, March 22nd. from 11am to raise funds for this very worthy cause. Your support for this Daffodil Day event will help to provide much needed services to adults and children with cancer.

Timooleague Ploughing Match

The long awaited Timoleague Ploughing Match will be held on Sunday next, March 22nd. The inclement weather over the past two months resulted in its postponement on more than one occasion. The organising committee are hopeful that conditions will be favourable on Sunday next and that this popular and long running fixture which celebrates its 90thstaging will be enjoyed by competitors and supporters alike. This year the ploughing will be held on The Sexton farm at Meelmane, Courtmacsherry, by kind permission. No doubt the late John Sexton will be looking down with pride as the participants display their skill of the ancient art that he was so involved in throughout his long life.  God speed the plough.

Tidy Towns AGM

The annual general meeting of Timoleague Tidy Towns was held on Wednesday night last at The Community Hall. There was a “feel good” atmosphere in the air following on from the adjudicator’s report on the village in this year’s National Tidy Towns Competition The officers were complemented on their great work throughout the past year and all present were extremely thankful for the brilliant support given by the wider community. It was unanimously agreed that the officer board be returned in bloc for 2026. Officers: Chairperson: Marian O’Callaghan, Secretary: Sheila Walton, Treasurer: Denise Foley, Social Media Co-Ordinator: Valerie Byrnes, PRO: Ed. Mc Sweeney.

Earlier in the week, three members, Marian O’Callaghan, Sheila Walton and Marie Mc Carthy travelled to Tralee for the awards ceremony for the southern region winners. They were presented with the gold medal which Timoleague won in The National Competition ’25.

Representitive Honours

Paul Deasy is a member of Keith Ricken’s Cork minor football panel who are presently competing in the Leinster Development League. Last week-end they enjoyed a win over Louth. Paul is joined by his Ibane team mates, Riley O’Donovan and Conrad Murphy on the squad as they fine-tune for the championship.

Cliona Harte scored 2-3 in Cork’s 14 point victory over Dublin in the All-Ireland Minor Camogie Championship at O’Toole Park on Sunday last. Both young sports stars are wished continued success in the season ahead.

Timoleague Charity Bingo

A charity bingo will be held at Timoleague Community Hall on Sunday next, March 22nd. at 3pm. The funds raised will go towards Cancer Connect. Your support for this very worthy cause would be greatly appreciated.

Horseracing

Last week Cheltenham dominated the headlines with two local horses running. Padraig Butler saddled Da Capo Glory who finished 8th in a field of 23 and connections can be well pleased with that performance. The previous day Padraig saddled a winner at Limerick when Nolan’s Rocco won The Party Time Handicap Chase just getting up on the line at a generous price of 5/1 in a field of 16.  Not bad going having two runners on both sides of The Irish Sea.

West Cork Rally

Local Timoleague interest in this years West-Cork Rally was provided by Kevin O’Sullivan of Abbeymahon. Competing for the first time in the prestigious event, Kevin was travelling well on Saturday but half way through Sunday’s programme, the car skidded off the road with three stages to go. While Kevin expressed disappointment at the outcome, he is determined to put it behind him, learn from the experience and drive on. We wish him well.
