Timoleague History Society
The Battle of Jutland was the largest naval battle of the First World War. It was fought off the coast of Denmark on the 31st May 1916. More than 100,000 sailors took part with over 8,600 deaths. Over 120 of those deaths were Cork men, many of whom were from along the west Cork coastline. Six Barryroe men and one Timoleague man died in the battle along with a large number from the Clonakilty, Skibbereen and Kinsale area.
To mark the 110th anniversary of this battle, Timoleague History Society are delighted to welcome Tony McCarthy to Timoleague Community Hall (eircode P72 F884) on Thursday April 23rd at 7:30pm. Tony is a retired Garda Sergeant and has an M.A. in local history and diploma in Genealogy from UCC. Among other items, he will discuss the leadup to the battle, the background to some of the sailors including the Lehina sailors (who were neighbours and friends of his grandfather) and the consequences of the battle.
A suggested donation to Timoleague History Society of €5 at the door plus refreshments will be served afterwards.
Tidy Towns Spring Clean
On Friday evening last the adverse weather conditions forced the cancellation of The Week End KWD Cleanup organised by Timoleague Tidy Towns. However, with an improvement in weather conditions, the Saturday cleanup went ahead for a number of hours. A large group of volunteers gathered at The Community Hall and all the approach roads to the village were cleared of litter that had been lodged by the road sides. While many might think that the roads are reasonably clean, the evidence suggests the opposite. The vast number of plastic bags supplied by KWD that were filled and gathered and left by The Community Hall for collection had to be seen to be believed.
After thunder and lightning brought work to a halt, all gathered at The Cabin at The Education Garden for a welcomed cup of hot tea and some tasty snacks. A big thank you to all who rallied to the cause. Just a reminder that the weekly Tidy Town meitheal takes place each Tuesday evening at 7pm. and all are welcome.
Soccer Success
Alice Kelly, daughter of Kevin and Jill of Inchybridge was on the Lakewood Athletic soccer team that won the Under 14 girls SFAI National Cup semi-final in Galway on Sunday last. She is wished well in the final. It seems that the size and shape of the ball doesn’t matter to the young sports girls around Timoleague.
