Sciath na Scol Success
Timoleague National School had a day to remember at Supervalu Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Wednesday last when they had a 6-8 to 3-6 victory over Gaelscoil Ui Riada, Bishopstown in the hurling final. They got off to a flying start, scoring 3-1 within minutes and though the Gaelscoil never gave up, the outcome was never in any real doubt. While James Deasy was Timoleague’s top forward scoring 4-3 in total, this was a complete team performance. The players displayed all the skills of the ancient game and the hurling they produced was a credit to their teachers, and the club underage coaches who have nurtured the players in the basic arts over the years.Timoleague went in at the break, 4-4 to 1-2 ahead and one felt that it was now theirs to lose. The bitter pill of being defeated in the final two years ago was incentive enough for them to drive on in the second period and that was what they did. Cork primary school’s player Danny Connolly dictated at mid-field, scoring two fine points from distance and the forwards had a plentiful supply of ball with Arthur Walsh chipping in with 1-1 and Dylan Harte scoring 1-2. Centre back Mikey Deasy impressed and assured custodian Steve Kelly was well protected by team captain Colum Coomey, Zac Murphy and James Keohane. Further out, Bill Dinneen, Ciaran Wilcox, Cian O’Sullivan and Jack Harte also played impressively.
This victory will be savoured by the players and the team of ’92 who were the last Timoleague winners of the competition can now stepaside safe in the knowledge that a new generation of young Timoleague hurlers have stepped up to the plate. They do say that the apple never falls far from the tree. Dan Connolly, Cathal Dinneen and Alan Long were on the team of ’92 and their sons, Danny, Bill and Jack basked in the glory last week as the hurling production line continues down Timoleague way. Sad to relate, the celebrations came to an abrupt end as Argideen stalwart and renowned Timoleague community volunteer, Donie O’Callaghan died peacefully on Saturday last. Ar dheis De go raibh se. Donie’s son Michael was captain of the 1992 Sciath na Scol winning team.
All-Ireland Final
Cara Daly of Ibane Gaels was on the Cork team that qualified for the All-Ireland Under 14 A Platinum Final. They defeated Galway in the semi-final last week-end and can now look forward to playing in an All-Ireland final. She is wished well.
