Community notes July 10th

July 11, 2026

Duck Race

Timoleague Tidy Towns’s annual duck race will be held on Saturday, July 25th. at 4pm. This novelty fundraising event never fails to arouse interest and is eagerly looked forward to each Summer. Ducks will be on sale at The Waterfront, under The Abbey on Saturday, July 11th. They can also be purchased at Foley’s Centra on Friday, July 17th. Ducks will also be available on Saturday, July 25th, prior to the race. Ducks can also be bought at any of the local businesses. It is advisable to purchase your duck early as it can afford the owner ample time for training the duck in the water so that it is familiar with the local aquatic conditions of the course. Ducks are priced at €5 each and there are very generous prizes on offer for the successful ducks.

Busy Pontoon

The Pontoon at Timoleague which was established by Timoleague Tidy Towns many years ago by forward thinking members, some sadly no longer with us, is experiencing something of a “second coming”. A number of ribs can be seen tied up at the moorings and it is a joy to see them at full speed going up and down the channel to the mouth of the estuary at Courtmacsherry. The pontoon will be an important focal point for the smooth running of the duck race at the end of the month. It is open for use and any boat owner who wishes to use the facility is welcome to do so. While Timoleague may no longer be navigable for large cargo boats, (The Lisbon Earthquake of 1755 saw to that!) none the less, to-day, smaller craft can navigate safely in the waters beside The Abbey.

Road Bowling

Hannah Sexton won her 3rd Ladies Senior Munster Road Bowling Final in Ballinagree last weekend. Her opponent, Denise Murphy put up very strong opposition on her home road to keep Hannahs win toa bowl of odds. On Sunday morning next Hannah meets the Ulster Champion, Dervla Toal Mallon in the All-Ireland Senior Ladies Final also at Ballinagree.

Richie Lawton is through to the South West Novice Final against Eoin Connolly of Ballygurteen.

Grants Awarded

Cork County Council recently announced grant funding under The Local Enhancement Programme. The Bandon Kinsale Municipal Area received a total of €48,000  for projects in its area. Timoleague organisations were among the beneficiaries in this generous allocation announced this week. Timoleague Tidy Towns were awarded €6,136; Timoleague Community Association benefited to the tune of €4,809 while Timoleague Educational Garden received €755. No doubt this much needed funding will be put to good use by those progressive organisations which will benefit the entire local community greatly.

Lisbon Earthquake and Tsunami

Readers will be afforded an opportunity to discover the facts behind the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755 and how it impacted on the coastline of South-West Cork. There will be a presentation and excursion in Timoleague on this Saturday, July 11 at 4pm by prominent geologist, Anthony Beese. This event is organised by Timoleague Historical Society and further information can be had by contacting (086) 7871358. This is your opportunity to find out the reason why the Argideen Estuary is so silted that Timoleague lost its status as “a Medieval port where foreign merchants from France and Spain bartered their wines and Mediterranean products for Irish butter, hides and farm produce.”(D O’hUallaigh 1983).

Fit-Up Theatre

The Fit-Up Theatre Troupe will perform “Word against The Word” at Timoleague Community Hall on Thursday, July 16th. at 8pm. This is a one man show that explores how a working-class Irish actor who has dyslexia, dreams of acting in Shakespearian plays using his own Waterford accent. Tickets are available at the door.
