Kate Fleming Communication Award
The annual Kate Fleming Communication competition was held at Timoleague National School during last term. This annual award commemorates the late Kate who was a pupil at the school. The students of fifth and sixth classes participated and the adjudicating panel of Kate’s parents, Peter and Kathleen and Mrs. Noreen Minihan had a most difficult job as the standard was exceptionally high. Each participant had to speak in front of their peers and judges at The Community Hall which was indeed a daunting task. As always there can only be one winner and this year the award went to Lauren O’Riordan but in short, all students who took part were winners.
GAA Lottery Draw
There was no winner of the Argideen Rangers GAA lottery jackpot of €14,800 last weekend. The numbers drawn were 8, 15, 21 and 30. Lucky dip winners of €30 each included; Patrick. Harte, Gurranes. Dan Harte, Station House. Rod & Geraldine McAlpine, Courtmacsherry and John Freyne, Burrane.. Next week’s draw with a jackpot of €14,900 will be held at Pad Joe's Bar on Sunday July 19th. Tickets at €2 each or 3 for €5 can be bought at Foley’s Centra, Pad Joe’s Bar, Monk’s Lane, Charlie Madden’s Bar, The Brewery Bar or from any club officer. Supporters of the draw are also asked to avail of modern technology by using the club’s online link by visiting www.clubspot.ie where one can avail of the user-friendly website. Pilgrimage to Medjugorje
A limited number of places have become available for a 7 night pilgrimage to Medjugorje from September 5th to 12th. Further information can be had by contacting Ger Madden at (086) 3666514.
Graveyard Masses
The annual graveyard masses for Timoleague parish will be celebrated at Timoleague Parish Church on Thursday, 23rd. of July at 7pm. Mass will be celebrated the following night, Friday July 24th at 7pm at Clogagh Church. There will be rosary and a blessing of the graves in the local areas after mass.
Fit-Up Theatre
On Thursday next, July 23rd. The Fit-Up Theatre Troupe will perform “Catalpa”. This production celebrated the 150th anniversary of the famous Catalpa Rescue. After the failed Fenian Rising, many of the leaders were transported to Van Demon’s Land and imprisoned in Freemantle in Western Australia. In 1876 a group of Irish- Americans Fenians including John Devoy purchased an American whaling ship, The Catalpa which set sail for the west coast of Australia.A successful audacious escape plan was put into operation and six Fenian prisoners were sprung. The Catalpa was intercepted by the British but it was flying the American flag and the perusers retreated to avoid an international incident. The Catalpa reached New York harbour and all on board were given a hero’s welcome. Two Cork men were among the six escapees. Michael Harrington, a soldier in the British army who was a secret member of the IRB and Thomas Hassett, who also served in the British army and who had made an unsuccessful escape the year previous.
Tickets can be purchased at the door of The Community Hall and the curtain goes up at 8pm sharp. Enjoy the production.
Tidy Towns
The officers and extended committee members of Timoleague Tidy Towns wish to thank all those who have been so diligent to date in making sure that the village is looking its best as we enter the busy tourist season. An army of volunteers have been at work over the past few months and the results of their efforts are plain to be seen. Indeed, Timoleague has been selected as the most improved entrant in the small villages category in the 2026 Anti-Litter Challenge, organised by Cork County Council. This is a fitting reward for all the community volunteers who had their priorities right “for the sake of the little village”!
Cork County Council have informed The Tidy Towns officers that the road sweeper will be in Timoleague village on Friday, July 17th. Residents of the village are asked to keep the street areas free of cars and other vehicles to facilitate this major clean-up. The street cleaner will also visit Chapel Hill and Chapel Avenue on Friday and the same appeal is requested. Your co-operation will be greatly appreciated and this operation will save many hours of physical toil.
Duck Race
Ducks can be purchased at Foley’s Centra on Friday next, July 17th. The organisers express thanks to all who bought and sold ducks last week-end at The Waterfront, near The Abbey.The duck race will take place on Saturday, July 25th at 4pm.
