Timoleague Historical Society
Timoleague Historical Society is delighted to announce the first of our autumn/winter series of events entitled, “The Principal Houses of Barryroe and Timoleague". The illustrated talk will be delivered by Courtmacsherry historian, author and artist, Margaret O’ Dwyer, who published a book on the topic recently.
The talk will be held as usual at Timoleague Community Hall on Tuesday 13th October, starting at 7:30pm. The event is open to all, with a €5 cash donation suggested on the door.
Margaret O’ Dwyer is a graduate of UCC, holding a degree in Art History and Archaeology and a Masters degree in Local History. Teaching and painting at outdoor locations in the parish of Barryroe encouraged her interest in the history of local big houses and inspired her to document their history.
Her resulting book, “Principal Houses in the Parish of Barryroe 18th - 20th Century”, brims with colourful images, paintings, beautifully drafted maps, and photos of past events.
Tracing the background of the resident families from the Norman Invasion to the present time, it provides a wonderful insight into the powerful families and dynasties in the parish since the Norman invasion.

There was no winner of the Argideen Rangers GAA lottery jackpot of €16,000 last weekend. The numbers drawn were 9, 11, 17, and 32. The Art of Bilocation
Modern science hasn’t yet come up with a solution to crack the art of bilocation. On Sunday last Padraig Butler played at full forward on the Argideen team that played Kilshannig at Coachford. Wearing his other hat as a successful horse trainer, Padraig had two runners at Killarney Races on Sunday afternoon also. While defeat was Argideen’s lot in the hurling, he did have some consolation when James the Brave won a handicap hurdle over 6 miles and 7 furlongs. He was ridden by Michael Kenneally and won comfortably to justify his 3/1 favourite’s tag.His other horse, Nolan’s Rocco ran in a handicap chase and with the same jockey on board, finished down the field.
Ibane Gaels
The U13 competitive season came to a conclusion last Sunday after a 3-6 to 0-10 football league final defeat to Blarney in Bandon. To reach the final in both hurling and football is a fantastic achievement and all involved should be extremely proud. Results did not go their way in the end, but this team never stopped in their endeavours and clearly has a bright future ahead.
Rosary at Chapel Steps
The rosary will be recited each evening during the month of October at the statue of Our Lady at the chapel steps at Main Street at 8pm. However, each Friday during the month it will be at 7pm.
The Green
Great work was done on Saturday last by a group of local volunteers at The Green. The amusements are located there during the festival each year and while they bring great joy and add to the festival programme, they do leave their mark on the grass surface. That said, Cathal Dineen rounded up a team of helpers to rectify the problem and the much used amenity area should be back to its original state before long.
